While I think New Orleans is too small a town and she would have opened up shop perhaps in Atlanta instead, this perspective on Blanche as a survivor breathed a new life into the work for me. Williams’, it’s said, took a moment, thought, and replied that she would have seduced a number of the orderlies in the asylum, got herself out, and opened a shop in the French Quarter-just as she had tried to recruit Stella to do during the play. Years after the play had been written, the actress playing Blanche in the UK premiere asked dear Tenn what happens to our heroine after curtain. And the only one whom he wouldn’t let fail. There’s always this unspoken implication that somehow, Blanche deserves to suffer because she tries to survive.īut if you look at the work, and you consider the realities of Blanche’s life and time, this is a misinformed and cold read on one of Williams most famous characters the one he himself identified the most with. Instead, we dance around the fact that Stanley rapes Blanche while Stella gives birth to his baby, and instead we focus on how Blanche was a whore. Just the fact that when you say “Streetcar Named Desire”, most think of Marlon Brando and not it’s two starring sisters should be enough to tell us that we haven’t let Blanche be the lead of her own story. No wonder I’ve avoided the work for nearly a lifetime-Just the fact that so many of us think of Blanche in less than compassionate terms should tell you everything. I am wholly disappointed with the short shrift Blanche is given by critics, in acting classes, and in our collective memory. So when David, months before the festival, assigned Sandi Holloway to direct me, I realized I wasn’t just doing a little something extra I was writing a whole-ass burlesque play. For the first time in my life, I was seeing Blanche from Blanche’s perspective. And learning to sympathize with her hell, even empathize in ways. And so, for months, I spent time developing these acts and getting to know Blanche. David was also struck with the idea that I’d do a classic vaudeville Spider hand puppet act, giving a showgirl wink to the hotel Blanche finds herself in on the road to New Orleans-”The Tarantula Hotel” (later misremembered or misdirected in Williams’ classic as “The Flamingo”). And later on, my Straight Jacket Striptease, which gives Blanche’s end in the play a triumphant twist. It started with the seeds of acts I have been performing for years-first, a reverse striptease that seemed fairly straightforward to start, and ending with a sadness not usually presented within burlesque but all too familiar for Tennessee’s women. Lagniappe is how they say “A Little Something Extra” in New Orleans, and while I knew that Blanche was always extra, I had no idea what I was getting myself into. And, since I was going to be there anyway, and since theater festival resources are, shall we say… stretched, he suggested I also plan to perform some of my burlesque work as a lagniappe presentation. Then, during our first year of Covid, 2020, my mentor and friend David Kaplan hired me to teach a burlesque workshop as part of the Provincetown Tennessee Williams Theater Festival. I thought I had done my dad right, writing off the southern epic with a know-it-all eye roll, and accepting the narrative that maybe it’s Stanley who is the victim, after all. I wanted nothing to do with the spoiled, hysterical, entitled, lying and faded debutante who represented everything my loving but misogynist father taught me are the definition of what it means to be a Woman. I’ve spent the majority of my near-forty years on this planet avoiding Blanche DuBois and A Streetcar Named Desire. In addition to Lefty Lucy’s Blanche, the show features a 2-person Greek-inspired chorus - the clowns of a classic vaudeville and our guides, providing context and commentary throughout the show as well as a guest vocalist, performing 3 songs that mirror Blanche’s arc and emphasize the harm our societal roles and structures have on all of us. Opening one scene before A Streetcar Named Desire, with her stay at the Tarantula hotel on the road to visit Stella in New Orleans, and following her arc through what happens after she visits the asylum, this Vaudeville is told through a series of variety acts, including puppetry, striptease, drag, live music and sideshow arts, creating a narrative experience that would make even Tennessee blush. In this surprising romp, writer and burlesque artist Lefty Lucy explores the B-side of this infamous debutante with a perspective of joy and resilience rarely allowed for one of Williams’ most famous heroines. In Fall of 2021, Lefty Lucy premiered A PEEP SHOW NAMED DESIRE (formerly Tennessee’s Latest Peep Show) in the Provincetown Tennessee Williams Theater Festival. You see, there is such a thing as perfection when it comes to face shapes. However, this is very easy to do given your already balanced facial shape. That is to always go for frames that are slightly wider than the widest part of your face, in order to keep everything looking balanced. There is a general rule I would like you to keep in mind though. You could go for cat-eyes, wayfarer, rectangle shape or even totally round glasses. As you are one of the lucky ones with your face shape you can get away with wearing almost any type of sunglasses. Now you will be needed some bad girl sunglasses to top your look off. You could even add bangs to any of the styles to highlight your beautiful eyes. For medium length hair you can do the same thing as I have suggested with the long hair. You can do any of these styles and change things up any way you feel, depending on the type of look you are going for. Your hair can be straight, wavy or curly with curls, the whole of your hair or just half way from the root can be styled. Add a wet or sleek look to a ponytail or middle part using a soft gel, which would frame your face nicely. This style will show off all your facial assets and give you a chic look.įor long hair, you could have it long and wavy using a curling wand or braids with no definitive parting. Even a long bob with blunt cut layers would look good. You could even go for a short crop style swept to either side of your face, as this style will draw attention to your beautiful eyes and jawline. If we add some highlights and lowlights to your hair and wisps of hair on the side of your face, this will make your eyes and cheekbones the focal point. The short pixie cut will look super gorgeous on you, especially with darker hair or a natural brown balayage. Because of this, I will just give you a few examples, so you have an idea about how these different hair length styles will compliment your face. When it comes to hairstyles, oval shaped faces are one of the lucky ones to be able to rock any style due to the versatility of your face shape. Simple is always better, and what you know goes with you skin already is what you should work with. The second thing is to stick to your normal foundation. You do not need to enhance all the features on your face at the same time. When doing make-up for oval face, two things are important to keep in mind. For your lips, any colour you choose to wear depending on your mood, make-up and outfit is fine. If you feel your eyes are your best features, then add a natural arch to your eyebrows and eyelashes for a dramatic look. This will lift the color of your face giving it a vibrant healthy glow. You can add some light blush to the apples of your cheeks and apply a warm bronzer to the underside of your cheekbones to contour and add further dimension. Our Queen B’s oval shape! Make-upĮven though your face shape is nearly flawless, a little contouring does not hurt. If you have an oval face shape, you know, you look like Beyonce for your face shape. (If you hate the idea of automatic muting and want your friends to hear every noise in your home at all times, you can disable this feature via the Xbox Accessories app within Xbox consoles and Windows 10 PCs.) Advertisement Building this monitoring into a headset's firmware, as opposed to voice-chat apps like Discord flatly watching your decibel level, is a far more effective control for background noise, and anyone who wants such fine-tuned control in their Xbox or Windows 10 voice chat of choice might want to put XWH at the top of their purchase list for that perk alone. The XWH's dual-mic array constantly weighs the difference between background noise and up-close speech activation and does a pretty phenomenal job managing the difference. With a podcast playing from a smartphone's speaker 6 feet away, the behavior worked the same. Whenever I interrupted that silence with random, low-volume speech, it woke instantly without losing nary a syllable. I left it recording during average breathing without it triggering once. The mic has two behaviors: waiting between 3-5 seconds after speaking loudly to mute itself, and waiting between 1-2 seconds if it's awoken by a loud sniff or sigh. I synced the XWH to my Windows 10 PC and ran a few audio recording apps to verify how this firmware-level default works, while leaving the slightly bendy, 9cm microphone in its default "hovering near my left cheek" position. What's more, in my tests so far, it appears to be very well-engineered. The other unique aspect to these headphones, and one I haven't seen in other Microsoft-branded headphones, is an automatic mic-mute option built in on the firmware level. (The chat-balance dial also apparently doesn't work on Windows 10, which is a shame.) Impressive first-gen mic Additionally, the chat balance wheel doesn't natively let you adjust volume between your Xbox source and your Bluetooth one you'll need to manually adjust Bluetooth volume via its device controls. This is my ideal use case, but if you're trying to keep your mic on with your native Xbox "party" while also calling Domino's via Bluetooth, you've been warned: the pizza (or your Discord posse) will be prioritized over any native Xbox voice-chat option. Podcasts, white noise generators, whatever: route that audio directly to your XWH.Īdditionally, when your Bluetooth device demands microphone control, either via a phone call or a voice-chat app like Discord, it takes priority. XWH opens this use case up widely by letting you turn on any arbitrary app on your Bluetooth device. Xbox consoles natively support third-party multimedia apps for the sake of background audio, which is great when you want to turn on preferred tunes while playing a game. And the XWH handles this nimbly, at least in my initial testing. It's certainly more convenient than having to tap the "Xbox" button, joystick through menus, and adjust headset volume and chat balance that way.īut the best reason for this option is that you can have one Bluetooth device and one Xbox device connected simultaneously. Both dials feel robust to turn on the fly, and the chat dial offers a clicky, nicely engineered "equal balance" position in the center. The left-hand dial controls "chat balance" to either emphasize in-game audio or voice chat. The right-hand dial offers "master" volume control as synced with your Xbox. Once synced this way, XWH users get access to two convenient volume dials, as braced on its outer earcups. Unlike many of those, the XWH adds a nifty hardware option. You'll find the same built-in 2.4GHz option in other Xbox-compatible headsets. Otherwise, you'll sync via Bluetooth, which works identically, and MS does a clever job having its sync button hunt for 2.4GHz signals and Bluetooth ones simultaneously.) (Same goes for Windows 10 PCs, should you own an Xbox Wireless Adapter. If you own any Xbox console dating from 2013's Xbox One to today's Xbox Series X/S, you can sync this headset the same way you sync a wireless controller. The XWH includes built-in compatibility with the 2.4GHz wireless protocol exclusive to Xbox consoles and accessories-arguably a clearer and more stable connection option than Bluetooth, depending on your ideal gaming room. I'll start with the Xbox-specific stuff, because this $99 headset isn't just a matter of repurposing existing headphones with neon-green accents. This is not annoying as it could be, it is highly impressive that he can find comedic inspiration in the most innocuous of places and turn them into ridiculously funny bits. It’s hard to know him after watching Repertoire, perhaps his personal life is something he has saved for his most recent tour (which is epic and wonderful and if anything, a little too personal). In four hours to fill, Acaster never really talks about himself. High-energy, intelligent and outrageously hilarious marmite. He’s not for everyone, and to continue the never-ending list of food gags in Acaster’s bag, he’s marmite. His delivery is what many would call “quirky”. This work ethic is just so fresh and inspiring and unseen in his contemporaries. Acaster’s jokes are varied in content but consistent in originality – bananas to Brexit to apricots to undercover cops to Mexican restaurants. James Acaster has hour hours to work with, essentially four chapters of the same routine. And comics typically only have forty-five minutes to fill. Daniel Sloss, who I so dearly admire and also has a Netflix special which is a must-see, has been telling jokes he wrote at 19 to audiences today. Most comedians, even the talented ones, find coming up with fresh material disastrous. I saw a relatively well-known comedian at Latitude two-years in a row repeating the exact same routine at the same festival, word for word. Writing any routine longer than 10 minutes is nearly impossible. He and perpetual sidekick Josh Widdicombe will be presenting a new panel show on Dave, that will hopefully be airing in 2019, named Hypothetical, which I was in the audience for an episode of! I was in the third row, so be prepared for my hearty walrus-like laugh if you’re going to watch, which I highly encourage you to.Īs somebody who has written their share of jokes in the past, it is difficult. He may not quite be a household name yet, but his unique brand of standup has been rising from the ashes of obscurity…or whatever. Offer unwavering love and praise would be more accurate.Īcaster has for too long been comedy’s underdog – the comedian’s comedian, an ‘in-joke’ the comedy world have kept to themselves for a while now. However – there are four episodes ergo it is episodic therefore it is television, because there is no ‘comedy’ section of this site, and it is essential that I review this, however it may frustrate me to defy categorisation. You certainly can't criticise Acaster for that.Ĭlear your schedules for four hours and watch these shows back-to-back.This is a TV review. At one point he cricitises people for "sloppy storytelling". Is it all true? I doubt if he was ever a lollipop man or an ice cream man, but he is so funny I don't really care. During a riff about Shrove Tuesday he dubs crepes "undercover pancakes". Throwaway lines come back and serve further jokes later on. Nobody puts a sentence together quite like Acaster (although I did briefly wonder if relative newbie John Kearns is influenced by his rhythms). I don't mind giving these routines away because Acaster delivers them so well they will still be gut-wrenchingly hilarious.Īs it has become compulsory to say about his work, Recap, like the other shows, is exquisitely crafted. A version of this also crops up in his book Classic Scrapes, so it must have happened. Does he really keep a tally chart of what ducks think of bread (two options - "can't get enough" and "nonplussed")? Elsewhere he has a story about meeting a woman via a game of Twister. Some of his flights of fancy are clearly constructed just for comic effect. He may not be weird but onstage he certainly has a sideways view of life, coming at subjects from bizarre angles. Let's face it, have you ever wondered what it would be like if your whole body was made of the type of skin your lips are made of. His topics of conversation suggest otherwise. " I don't want you to think I'm weird," says Acaster disingenuously during Recap. There is Recognise (2014), Represent (2015), Recognise (2016) and, perhaps most interesting, Recap, which pulls together material from older shows and very cleverly ties some loose threads together. Not one, not two, not three, but four James Acaster shows have just started streaming on netflix under the overall banner of Repertoire. “Health care is a great opportunity to compare the best of Biden to the worst of Trump,” Cooper said. On Tuesday, the campaign argued that a second Trump presidency could strip insurance from up to 135 million Americans with preexisting conditions.Īnd on Wednesday, the Biden campaign underscored that nixing ObamaCare would mean Americans under the age of 26 would be kicked off their parents’ insurance plans, warning that could lead to “financial ruin for a whole generation of young, uninsured Americans.” “Trump certainly gave us sufficient time to plan and make this a weeklong endeavor,” the source said. SmartDraw has over 40,000 different symbols in total and there are hundreds of electrical symbols to choose from in the Smart Panel. The same applies when you make changes – SmartDraw will automatically re-balance and tidy up wiring which saves a lot of stress. Not only that, but it uses Smart Formatting to connect circuit lines automatically – there’s no messing around trying to align or connect things manually. SmartDraw makes it extremely quick to design circuits due to a huge choice of templates that you can easily customize to fit your layout. SmartDraw is a multi-purpose diagramming tool but is actually one of the best CAD software we’ve seen, especially for beginners. SmartDraw is by far the best electrical design software on Mac or Windows and makes it incredibly easy to draw circuits and electrical layouts. With this in mind, here then are the best electrical design software for Mac and Windows in order of ranking. Will you be using it just for electrical wiring drawings or do you need the possibility of drawing pneumatics, hydraulics, HVAC and other types of technical diagrams?.Do you need support for embedding graphical images in drawings?.Do you need flat or hierarchical schematic plans?.SPICE simulation netlists are useful for testing the functionality of your circuits. Do you need PCB layout features with netlist formats? PCB design is more about the physical placement of parts compared to schematic design which is more theoretical. Does it support standard and custom symbol libraries?.When choosing which was the best circuit simulation tool, we considered some of the following questions. What We Looked For In The Best Electrical Drawing Software What We Looked For In The Best Electrical Drawing Software. The future of Electronic Design Automation (EDA) software is undoubtedly online and most of these apps work on any platform so these reviews will also be of interest to Windows users.įor Mac users, all of the circuit design software reviewed here are the best alternatives to Tin圜AD For Mac and work on the latest versions of macOS Big Sur, Catalina and the new M1 Macs. The good news is that nowadays there’s some excellent dedicated electrical drawing software out there that work on both macOS and Windows and don’t have the steep learning curve of CAD software. There will be a growing demand for software to meet the demand of deep learning, Internet of Things (IoT), virtual reality, augmented reality, driverless vehicles and much more.Ĭurrently, Windows users can use powerful wiring diagram software like Microsoft Visio or free schematic drawing software such as Tin圜AD but there is no Visio for Mac and no version of Tin圜AD for Mac either.Īlternatively, some Electronic Engineers use complex CAD software (also known as ECAD software) but these are usually expensive and time-consuming to learn and use. The electronics design industry is forecast to be worth a whopping USD $14 billion by 2024. Here we’ve looked at the best electrical plan and wiring drawing software for Mac & Windows in 2023. The complexities of drawing electrical schematics mean the right tool is essential to get things right. They were friendly, awe-inspiring creatures, purportedly, but they terrified Dave instead. Once, when he was a kid, his dad took him scuba diving with dolphins. Though I had no idea at the time, he was anxious that Dave and I might feel intimidated about making the trip such a big payoff, so quickly, would get us excited and defuse any apprehensions.įor Dave, the whale-sighting had exactly the opposite effect. It seemed to him as if the animal were putting on a show, swimming playfully in the kelp, diving, resurfacing, then plowing its open mouth across the surface to feed. We were only starting to move around again, packing our gear into the kayaks, when we heard the first huff of a blowhole, not far offshore. We were on earth - finally, really on earth. To me, it felt like those scenes of astronauts who, having finally rattled free of the earth’s atmosphere, slip into the stillness of space. It was a familiar phenomenon for Jon from the start of all his trips: a moment that people instinctually paused to soak in. As the boat that delivered us vanished, the drone of its engine dampening into a murmur and then finally trailing off, it became unthinkably quiet on the beach, and the largeness and strangeness of our surroundings were suddenly apparent. Jon was working as a sea-kayaking guide that summer in Glacier Bay National Park, and he had invited us up for a seven-day excursion during his week off. Jon, Dave and I had just been dropped off on a remote Alaskan shoreline, an hour and a half by boat from the closest speck of a town. The whale sighting happened right away, minutes into Day 1. |
